🛑 1. Preservation vs. Damage

  • Proper Cleaning: Uses gentle, non-abrasive methods and cemetery-safe products. These are specifically designed to clean biological growth (moss, lichen, mold) without harming the stone. These products work well but can be pricey to use.
  • Pressure Washing: Uses high-force water jets that can erode, crack, or shatter stone—especially older or softer ones like marble, sandstone, or limestone. This causes irreversible damage.

🧠 2. Respect for History and Legacy

  • Proper Cleaning: Honors the historical and emotional significance of the memorial. Specialists know how to maintain inscriptions, carvings, and symbolism.
  • Pressure Washing: May blast away lettering, dates, and detail—essentially erasing the story engraved into the stone.

🔍 3. Attention to Detail

  • Proper Cleaning: Involves a detailed hand-cleaning process, often followed by condition assessment. Any cracks, loose pieces, or biological damage are noted and treated appropriately.
  • Cheap Power Washing: Focuses on appearance only—not the stone’s health or stability.

✅ 4. Compliance and Ethics

  • Proper Cleaning: Follows guidelines from organizations like the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) and Association for Gravestone Studies.
  • Pressure Washing: Often violates cemetery policies or state laws about monument care—risking fines and complaints.

💰 5. Long-Term Cost Efficiency

  • Proper Cleaning: Protects and preserves the stone for years, reducing the need for future repair or replacement.
  • Cheap Pressure Washing: May require costly restoration after damage—or full replacement, which can run thousands of dollars.
